Ever thought about how whiskey is made? A new movie will demonstrate the extensive process behind making one of the world’s most interesting spirits.
Produced by the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), the movie I, Whiskey will tell the stories of people in the marketplace who come together to distill and distribute whiskey around the world.
“I, Whiskey is the story of entrepreneurs, scientists, and bootleggers and the whiskey they produce—a rebel spirit renowned for its individuality and colorful history,” said Lawson Bader, CEI’s president, in a press release.
The movie will be the second in the I, Pencil series by CEI. The I, Pencil movie, based on a short story by Leonard Read, describes how many complex interactions go into the process behind making a pencil. Through the system of free markets, millions of people work together to contribute their skills and labor in order to design an object that appears so simple.
Whiskey was a perfect choice for the next movie, especially with its devoted following throughout history. Even Mark Twain was a fan. “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough,” he once said. Today, whiskey has been experiencing another surge in popularity.
According to CEI, this popularity has led to smaller craft distillers bringing innovation to the whiskey industry. The result is a “global whiskey renaissance.” In fact, some argue that an investment in whiskey is more lucrative than gold.
“We’re inspired by whiskey’s rich history and tradition, as well as the free market and human ingenuity,” said Bader. “How these two – whiskey and the free market – work together to create something unexpected, rebellious, and unplanned is a story worth telling, and one that we think unites us around the world.”
To help fund the project, CEI has put together an Indiegogo campaign with the goal of raising $140,000 over the next month. Before launching the campaign, CEI had raised $60,000 for the movie.
Already, you can see a few glimpses and trailers of the movie on the I, Whiskey Youtube page. It promises to be a fascinating look into how many people must come together in order to expertly produce each bottle of whiskey. Whether you’re a seasoned whiskey expert or just interested in beginning your education, I, Whiskey is something you don’t want to miss.
